Threading a sewing machine may seem daunting at first, but with the right steps, you’ll be stitching in no time! Whether you’re a beginner or just need a refresher, this guide will walk you through the process.

Step 1: Gather Your Supplies

Before you begin, ensure you have everything needed for the process:

  • A threaded spool
  • A bobbin wound with thread
  • Your sewing machine manual (if needed)
  • Good lighting to see the threading path clearly

To get the best results, consider checking out our haberdashery collection for high-quality sewing essentials, including sewing machines and threads.

Step 2: Place the Thread Spool

Start by positioning the spool of thread on the spool pin. Then, secure it with a spool cap to prevent slipping.

Step 3: Guide the Thread Through the Machine

Next, pull the thread through the thread guide at the top of the machine. Carefully follow the directional arrows or numbers on your machine for the correct path. Once the thread reaches the tension discs, loop it around them.

After that, pull the thread up through the take-up lever, ensuring it catches properly. Finally, bring the thread down again towards the needle.

Step 4: Thread the Needle

Now, insert the thread through the eye of the needle from front to back. Then, pull a few inches of thread through to allow for stitching. If your machine includes an automatic needle threader, take advantage of it to simplify the process.

Step 5: Load the Bobbin

To prepare the bobbin, start by opening the bobbin case and inserting the wound bobbin. Then, pull the bobbin thread through the guide as instructed by your machine. Ensure the bobbin case is securely in place before moving forward.

Step 6: Draw Up the Bobbin Thread

With one hand, hold the top thread. Using the other hand, turn the handwheel towards you to lower and raise the needle. This action should cause the bobbin thread to loop up. Once you see it, pull it through and position both threads towards the back of the machine, leaving a few inches free.

Step 7: Test Your Stitching

Before starting your project, place a piece of scrap fabric under the presser foot. Lower the presser foot and begin stitching slowly to check if the threading is correct. If necessary, adjust the tension to achieve smooth stitches.
